Xbox Insiders offers new features for older gaming controllers and TV remotes

Microsoft has opened up a new firmware update for the Xbox controller in store, as well as other updates exclusively to Alpha members of the Xbox Insiders program. This firmware update includes several new features for Xbox’s older consoles, in which the ability to change quickly between two devices is supported and hidden. Alpha members can also watch the HDMI-CEC update that allows them to control their dashboards with remote control.

The most important update announced today is that, at least for those who use their devices with multiple Xbox controllers, Microsoft is making it easier between devices. Most Xbox controllers have Bluetooth support, which they use to connect to non-Xbox devices — when they connect to Xbox through the Xbox Wireless protocol. The newer Xbox controllers have the ability to “remember” one Bluetooth connection and an Xbox One Wireless connection, and users can manipulate the link between a pair of double-tone buttons.

This will happen if you’re playing Xbox Game Pass on your Xbox and want to continue playing on your Android phone (yes, that game is available to play through Cloud Streaming), then you can do this with an Xbox One or Xbox Adaptive controller, provided you are a member of Xbox Insides.

In addition to making the link easier to switch, Xbox also provides controllers with greater Dynamic Latency Input, which “puts controllers more efficiently to your Xbox Series X|S console to experience a more responsive and instantaneous action”. This means that Xbox One controller and Xbox Series X/S can operate on just about every comfort native controller.

The new firmware update is currently only available as Alpha Skip-Ahead and Alpha Insider rings throughout the 2110.210906-2200.

Another update that users might find interesting is the ability to use their TV remotes to modify the Xbox Dashboard, which is also rolling out to those users. With this update, users will be able to control apps like Netflix with their remote controller location, an advantage that improves Xbox Live as a media center. Users can also change their TV input using the controller – by clicking the Xbox button, they can turn it on quickly for their comfort.
